Modified with the AN/APS-143(V)-1 Air Sea Surveillance Radar to detect objects in the Gulf of Mexico, the aircraft can detect a person in a life raft up to 25 miles out in the water. He relays this telemetry data to the range safety officer, who determines the firing range for live fire activity.

The aircraft has a fixed antenna array that receives and records telemetry from test vehicles and drones flying over the Gulf of Mexico. It has the ability to transmit two UHF antenna frequencies over the horizon to ground locations.

The modified civilian Dash-8 entered service in 1988 with the 53rd Weapons Evaluation Group and has supported the Weapons System Evaluation Program at nearby Eglin AFB, Fla., with maritime surveillance radar and telemetry data collection ever since.

Among the programs supported by E-9 are the advanced cruise missile proof of concept, the Navy's Fjord missile program and F-22 Raptor live missile testing.
